In the last 10 years or more, the way I go about my daily life has changed. This morning, I realised yet another thing that was left behind in my childhood.
I’ve been spending every day in the library, studying and writing. After my weeks of library-silence (except for the quiet tappety-tap of keyboards) I nearly jumped out of my skin this morning when a loud, horrible crashing/grinding/tearing sound broke out. It was ten long seconds of distress and I was terribly concerned for the poor people who must be losing limbs and life in the disaster.
And then I finally realised I had heard the very same sound a long, long time ago in a strange place where there were no computers to write with. What had me so scared and surprised was nothing more than a student sharpening her pencil in a truly old school pencil sharpener. I had actually forgotten they exist.

Je me souviens de l’arôme du taille crayon.

NEVER FORGET

Nostalgia - it’s delicate, but potent. Teddy told me that in Greek, “nostalgia” literally means “the pain from an old wound.” It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. This device isn’t a spaceship, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called the wheel, it’s called the carousel. It let’s us travel the way a child travels - around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know we are loved.
